2 Mistrust Schema, Where do I defend against a danger that is already over?
Mistrust is the certainty that people will hurt or use us, so we stay guarded at all times. It kept us safe once. Now it guards a door the danger already left.
It is never just a belief. It is a weave of four threads: the memory of trust given and then broken, a wariness that never fully stands down, the bracing where the guard goes up first, and the belief that people will hurt or use me. Underneath them is a need that went unmet, safety, and people who could be relied on. The schema grew in its place.
So we cope. We pick people who confirm it and brace for harm. We keep everyone at a distance. We test, control, or strike first. Each move keeps the guard up, and keeps the proof coming.
Healing does not erase the pattern. It loosens its grip. The Healthy Adult learns a truer line: the danger was real then, not everywhere now. Some people are safe. We turn toward the Vulnerable Child who needed protection that never came, and become it: I have us, and I will not let this happen again. We take one small, chosen risk with a safe person, and let the trust be met instead of trapped.
The guard may still rise. We can notice it and choose to stay.
Inquiry:
Where do I defend against a danger that is already over?
Could I let one safe person closer, by an inch?
