Therapy Dairy
It’s been very delightful recently during my work sessions when clients started raising their own inquiries. This morning, a client asked: “I see that currently I am struggling with this issue at work, no matter what happened in the past, no matter what my parents did that affected me to have this issue, I still need to deal with it by myself at this point, so what is the point of looking back and analyzing my past? My memory of the past also could be twisted.” She also asked:” Is there a state of me that’s not hurt, not damaged, not affected, not lacking? We talk about restoration, then there must be a state like this, right? Or are we born already hurt and deficient? How do we clean out or purify ourselves from all the pollution?”
The other day, another client who’s 26 years old asked:” I see that as I am right now, I most likely will hit middle age crisis at some point, that if I don’t know who I am, and what I am living out, I sense this emptiness and loss of direction. So how can I discover who I am when I don’t know where to go?” “Is my self a dynamic?”
I feel like healing starts when we ask questions that draw our attention back to ourselves.
With the first client, we explored this analogy together in the session: if someone punched me and left a wound on my arm, I could blame/shout at that person, I could tell others how painful it is, I could ask for others’ comfort, I could stay in my room the whole day crying for having this wound, however nevertheless, in the end, this wound is on me, I am the one experiencing it, and I am the one having no choice of healing it. Nobody can replace me in this experience. This client said:” It comes back to the ownership, that I take the ownership of the struggle, and I see that I never escape the pain, no matter what strategy I use to run away.” Listening to her, I sensed energy arising.
I feel grateful to work with clients who ask questions in a way that helps them discover with openness. Sometimes they shared with me how they applied what they’ve learned in therapy in their lives, which also supported the people around them. In those moments, they showed me the value of this work 🙏
