What if naming the feeling is most the work?
Most of us think emotional intelligence means “controlling” emotions. But often, the first step is simply naming them.
This is called Affect Labeling, the practice of putting feelings into words. Research shows that when we accurately label what we feel, the brain begins to regulate emotional intensity more effectively. What felt overwhelming becomes more understandable. More manageable. More conscious.
This small shift creates distance between us and the reaction.
Without awareness, emotions tend to run on autopilot. With awareness, we gain choice.
Affect labeling doesn’t mean suppressing emotions. It means relating to them consciously instead of becoming consumed by them.
Clarity can begin with a question, what I’m actually feeling right now?
