What is ADHD?
Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder - does that mean I will be jumping around looking for attention?
Maybe you will, if you are a little boy. ADHD can look different in different individuals depending on their age, gender and their environment. It is basically a person who has developed a high level of sensitivity towards their environment because at some point of their childhood, they did not feel safe. This causes them to be alert all the time, waiting for something to happen. The nervous system becomes programmed to react to everything around them.
1. They pick up the slightest change in the environment and read 20 steps ahead only to get overstimulated, with little capacity to manage their own emotions.
2. They are so sensitive to others' emotion that they walk on eggshells all the time, fearing they will upset someone (RSD - Rejection Sensitivity Disphoria). They also overcompensate.
3. They have energy outbursts that can fuel into creativity and excellence - they are the high achievers and perfectionists who will also disappear for months due to burnout
4. They can get into a rabbit hole and solve the world's mysteries but then forget to eat and sleep.
5. They want to show up but tracking time is a challenge for them so they always struggle with time management.
These are not the only things to spot for ADHD, but if you see these signs in you, reach out for help before you crash with burnout. Not all ADHD needs medication and some can be managed with good coping mechanisms, change in belief systems and lifestyle change.
